Buying an engagement ring or wedding band should feel exciting, not overwhelming. Whether you’re just starting to explore diamond shapes and the 4Cs, or you’re ready to book your private appointment, we’ve gathered answers to the questions couples ask us most. As a fourth-generation, family-owned jeweler with nearly a century of experience, Alson Jewelers is here to guide you through the process, every step of the way.

GETTING STARTED

Do I need an appointment to shop for an engagement ring?
Walk-ins are always welcome, no appointment required. If you’d prefer to make an appointment with a Bridal Specialist, you’re welcome to call or book your appointment a ahead of time.
What should I bring to my appointment?
Bring any inspiration photos, a Pinterest board, or a ring you love the look of. If you already know a ring size, bring that too, though we can also size on the spot.
How can I find out my partner’s finger size?
The easiest way is to discreetly borrow a ring they already wear on that finger and bring it in. We can size it from there. If borrowing isn’t an option, tracing the ring’s inner circle on paper works too!
How far in advance should I start shopping?

Most couples start looking two to six months before a proposal, though custom pieces can take four to six weeks to complete. Earlier is better if you have a specific vision.

Do couples usually shop together when looking for an engagement ring?

Most couples do come in together for that first visit. Once the purchaser has a clear sense of the style their significant other loves, they’ll often return solo to make the final decision. And, sometimes will add a special surprise to make the presentation even more memorable.

How much should I spend on an engagement ring?
Start with a budget that fits your personal finances. A ring you love within that budget keeps the whole experience joyful and stress-free. From there, let your eye guide the search: the diamond shape, a setting style, metal type, or overall aesthetic that draws you in. Focusing on what matters most to you and your partner will naturally narrow things down to rings that deliver beauty, quality, and lasting value, all without exceeding your budget.

DIAMONDS AND QUALITY

What is a GIA certificate, and why does it matter?

GIA, the Gemological Institute of America, is the industry’s most trusted independent diamond grading lab. Every natural diamond we sell comes with a GIA certificate confirming its exact cut, color, clarity, and carat weight, so you always know precisely what you’re purchasing.

Do you sell lab grown diamonds?

We specialize in natural, GIA certified diamonds. We do not sell lab grown diamonds. Natural diamonds carry real geological history and hold long term value in a way lab grown stones have not.

What are the 4Cs?

Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat. Cut has the biggest impact on brilliance, color and clarity affect how white and clean a diamond appears, and carat is simply the weight. We walk through all four with you at your appointment so you understand exactly what you’re comparing.

Which of the 4C’s is most important.

When clients ask which of the 4Cs (Cut, Color, Clarity and Carat) matters most, the definitive answer is always cut. While carat dictates size and color and clarity determine purity, cut is the single factor that determines a diamond’s brilliance, and overall beauty. Even a diamond with flawless clarity and pure colorless grading will appear dull and lifeless if it isn't cut with precision.

What is the difference between diamond carat weight and diamond size?

Carat measures weight, while size measures physical dimensions.

Carat Weight: A measure of mass (1 carat = 0.2 grams). It tells you how heavy the diamond is, not how big it looks.

Diamond Size: The physical surface area (measured in millimeters) that you actually see from above when the ring is on your hand.

Two diamonds with the exact same carat weight can look entirely different in size depending on their cut proportions(deep cuts hide weight underneath) and shape (elongated cuts like Ovals and Radiants appear larger on the finger).

When shopping, look at both the carat weight and the millimeter measurements to get the best visual impact.

What is the best diamond color for the money?

Diamonds in the G, H, or I range appear bright white face-up once set, but cost far less than D, E, or F colorless stones.

Pro Tip by Setting Metal: White Gold / Platinum: Stick to G or H for a crisp, white look.

Yellow Gold / Rose Gold: You can comfortably choose a color grade of I or J diamond, as the warm metal naturally masks subtle undertones, giving you a beautiful look at a much better value.

What’s the difference between a $5,000 ring and a $15,000 ring?

Usually a combination of diamond size, color, cut quality, and metal choice. We’re happy to show you options across a range of budgets so you can see the difference in person.

RING STYLES AND DESIGN

What diamond shapes and ring styles do you carry?

We carry the area’s largest selection of engagement rings and loose diamonds in every shape. From timeless round solitaires to oval, cushion, emerald cut, and modern contemporary styles, from designers including Precision Set, JB Star, ArtCarved, Mark Patterson, and more. Alson Signature Collection, Artcarved, JB Star, Mark Patterson, and Precision Set.

Which diamond shape looks the biggest on a hand?

Elongated shapes appear largest for their carat weight. They cover more visible surface area on the finger: Oval, Radiant, Pear, Elongated Cushion, Marquise and Emerald cut.

Can I design a custom ring?

Yes. Bring us a photo, a sketch, or even just an idea, and our team can help you design a one-of-a-kind ring.

What is the process to custom-design an engagement ring?

It begins with a personal consultation at our store where you’ll meet with one of our jewelry specialists to share your ideas, inspiration images, and budget. We then develop design concepts, present CAD renderings for your approval, and guide you through selecting the perfect GIA-certified natural diamond. Final craftsmanship is executed to the highest standards, with every detail reviewed before delivery.

What metals do you offer?

White, yellow, and rose gold, as well as platinum, in a range of finishes and band styles.

What is the difference between platinum and white gold?

Platinum: A naturally white metal that doesn’t fade or need replating. Denser and more durable, so it holds prongs/settings more securely over time. Develops a soft “patina” with wear and is more expensive than white gold.

White Gold: Made by mixing pure yellow gold with white alloys, then coated in rhodium for a bright finish. Over time, as the plating wears, subtle warm undertones show through, requiring quick rhodium re-plating every few years to restore its shine.

Bottom line: Platinum costs more upfront but requires less maintenance long-term; white gold is more affordable but needs periodic replating to stay bright white.

Can I turn a family heirloom diamond or gemstone into a new setting?

Yes, we regularly reset family diamonds and heirloom gemstones into new custom designs.

WEDDING BANDS

When should I start shopping for a wedding band?

Most couples shop for wedding bands two to four months before the wedding, since bands may need sizing or if it’s a custom design.

Does my wedding band need to match my engagement ring exactly?

No, but we’ll help you find a band that complements your engagement ring’s metal, style, and profile so they sit well together on your hand.

Do you carry men’s wedding bands?

Yes, we carry a full selection of men’s bands in a range of metals and finishes.
