Step by Step Guide to Buying an Engagement Ring

Buying an engagement ring is one of the most meaningful purchases you will ever make, and it should feel exciting, not overwhelming. Alson Jewelers is a fourth generation, family owned jewelry store, and has been guiding Cleveland area couples through this process since 1931. Here is exactly what to expect, step by step.

Step 1: Set Your Budget

Before you look at a single diamond, decide what you are comfortable spending. Our team works with every budget and will help you understand where your money makes the biggest visual and quality impact, whether that means prioritizing a larger center diamond, a higher clarity grade, or a more intricate setting.

Step 2: Schedule an Appointment

While walk-ins are always welcome, engagement ring shopping is best done one-on-one. Schedule an appointment ensures a member of our team is ready to present diamonds and settings specifically suited to your preferences and budget

Step 3: Learn the 4Cs

Every natural diamond is evaluated on four characteristics: cut, color, clarity, and carat weight. Together, the 4Cs determine a diamond’s overall quality, and understanding them will help you shop with confidence. Cut has the greatest effect on a diamond’s brilliance, making it often the most important factor to consider. Alson only sells natural, GIA-certified diamonds, so every diamond comes with an independent grading report you can trust. Our team will walk you through each of the 4Cs so you know exactly what you’re looking at.

Step 4: Choose a Diamond Shape

Round brilliant, oval, cushion, emerald, pear-shaped, and radiant are the most popular shapes. Each one wears differently on the hand and pairs best with certain setting styles. This is a great step to explore in person or with photos of rings you or your partner already love.

Step 5: Pick a Setting Style

Step 6: Compare Diamonds Side by Side

During your appointment, you’ll compare several natural, GIA-certified diamonds side by side under the same lighting and magnification, evaluating brilliance, scintillation, cut, and shape proportions. A certificate only tells part of the story; seeing diamonds next to one another is how you’ll find the one that truly speaks to you.

This side-by-side approach is also the best way to judge size. Diamonds are measured by weight, not physical dimensions, so two diamonds of equal carat weight can appear very different in size. Prioritizing cut will always yield a more dazzling result vs. carat weight alone.

Step 7: Select or Customize the Setting

Once the diamond is chosen, you will select a setting from our bridal collection, or work with your bridal specialist on a custom design.

Step 8: Finalize the Setting and Sizing

Ring sizing and any last minute engraving or design details happen before the ring is ready for pickup.

Step 9: Protect Your Investment

We provide full appraisal documentation on every purchase. Having your ring properly appraised and insured from day one protects your purchase for the long term.
